JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - On 10 February 2016, Indonesian Minister of the Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, wrote to Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) to request that the company refrain from featuring the ministry’s logo and a foreword from one of its directors-general in the Conservation Masterplan published by the Belantara Foundation – a new foundation recently established by APP.
The masterplan was launched during an event to mark the third anniversary of APP’s Forest Conservation Policy on 4 February 2016 in Jakarta.
Responding to the minister's letter, APP wrote to the minister on 23 February 2016, apologizing for any misunderstanding. Subsequently, the executive summary of the conservation masterplan was removed from the APP website.
"We appreciate this step by APP to comply with the rules of our ministry. This is a sign of mutual respect, respect for the rules. There are procedures and rules that we must all go through before the ministry’s logo may be featured in the documents of third parties," Bambang Hendroyono, Secretary General of the Environment and Forestry Ministry told FORESTHINTS.NEWS on Thursday (Mar 3) in Jakarta.
Bambang said that the ministry insisted that all sides abide by the rules, not just the APP.
The Belantara Foundation also sent a letter to the ministry on 22 February 2016, in which it too apologized for the inconvenience.
In addition, YAPEKA, the foundation that drafted the conservation masterplan, sent a written apology to the ministry on 17 February 2016, in which it stated its regret at having used the ministry’s logo and the director-general’s foreword without the prior written consent of the Ministry.
"We hope that the Ministry will provide further guidance on how to help support the protection and restoration of our forest landscape program moving forward," Aida Greenbury, APP's Managing Director of Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement, told FORESTHINTS.NEWS on Sunday (Mar 6) in Jakarta.
