JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - Indonesia continues to record positive growth in exports of its forestry products to the US despite the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, this export growth is constantly moving up month by month, as indicated by the latest data as of October this year.
“Of course we are very grateful for this performance. We are also very pleased with the demand from the US for Indonesia's forestry products which is consistently rising despite the difficult pandemic situation.”
Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya emphasized this in a virtual discussion on the export performance of Indonesian forestry products as of October 2020.
Minister Nurbaya pointed out that the growth of Indonesia's forestry product exports to the US stood at 15.91% from January-October 2020 compared to the same period last year.
She explained that there was an increase in the export value of forestry products from Indonesia to the US from USD1.11 billion from January-October 2019 to almost USD1.29 billion in the same period in 2020.
The following graph depicts the trend of rising export growth of Indonesia's forestry products to the US.
Export growth to EU also still positive
This upward trend is not confined to exports to the US. According to Minister Nurbaya, export growth of Indonesian forestry products to the EU was also up by more than 10% from January-October 2020 compared to the same period last year.
The graph below demonstrates the growth in exports of Indonesian forestry products to the EU, which had previously experienced negative growth in the January-August 2020 period compared to the same period last year.
Minister Nurbaya said that although overall export growth of Indonesian forestry products as of October 2020 was still minus 3.6%, time-series data shows that deeper negative growth was successfully avoided thanks to all the efforts of the government and the forestry business sector.
“The fact that we have had such an outstanding performance as of October this year needs to be underlined as this is not easy to achieve during a global pandemic," she asserted.
Legality assurance and sustainability
Meanwhile, Indonesian Forestry Business Association Chairman Indroyono Soesilo reiterated that Indonesia's forestry product export performance has been concretely backed up by a set of tax and non-tax related relaxation policies undertaken by the government in response to the COVID-19 situation.
"I would like to thank the government very much for reducing export taxes and expanding the base of forestry exports, including continuing to apply the SVLK (Indonesia's timber legality assurance system)," Soesilo told FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Nov 3).
He added that in principle Indonesia's forestry business sector continues to place timber legality assurance and sustainability at the highest level while also carrying on joint efforts with the government to ensure no haze-causing fires.
As reported earlier by FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Oct 15), Indonesia has succeeded in defying the prediction of a double-disaster by ensuring that local and transboundary haze-causing fires have not occured during the COVID-19 outbreak.
