JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - According to the Indonesian Orangutan Forum (FORINA), it did not provide a deadline for the IUCN to respond to its letter (Jul 27) which declared that the 2019 modified orangutan population and habitat viability assessment (PHVA) document has been withdrawn and should not be used as a scientific reference.

"We think positively that the IUCN will soon respond to the letter from FORINA. However, regardless of whether the IUCN responds or not, the 2019 PHVA document has still been withdrawn," FORINA chairman Aldrianto Priadjati wrote (Aug 3) in response to an inquiry from FORESTHINTS.NEWS.

As previously reported by FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Jul 28), the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through the Director General of Nature Resources and Ecosystem Conservation Wiratno, expressed appreciation for FORINA's rapid move to withdraw the illegally modified 2019 PHVA document.

"FORINA is very grateful for the appreciation from DG Wiratno. After we received the letter from the ministry, FORINA immediately coordinated, then answered the letter and sent a statement to the IUCN," Priadjati added.

"All of this was done quickly to demonstrate our responsibility as the party that initiated the preparation of the 2019 PHVA document. We hope that in the future, FORINA can establish more effective and intensive communication with DG Wiratno and the ministry," he continued.

Priadjati asserted that "since the 2019 PHVA document has been withdrawn and is no longer valid, the scientific reference to be used for orangutans is the 2016 PHVA document.

Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya in her message on Earth Day 2020, as part of the ministry’s efforts to protect orangutans from the COVID-19 outbreak, as reported by FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Apr 22), also shared photos of captured Sumatran, Tapanuli and Bornean orangutans together with their offspring, as shown again below.

New opportunity appreciated

The FORINA chairman expressed his gratitude for the opportunity given by Minister Nurbaya to upgrade the 2016 PHVA document.

“The FORINA secretariat itself has planned to hold discussions with the FORINA MPA (Member Trusteeship Council) about the possibility of upgrading the 2016 PHVA document, because the analysis for Tapanuli orangutans still forms part of the Sumatran orangutans in this document,” he explained.

“However, as we all know FORINA is a multi-stakeholder forum whose members come from 4 chambers, namely the government, NGOs, companies (private sector) and observers/ universities. Each of these chambers is represented by the MPA,” he elaborated.

“As such, every strategic decision issued by FORINA needs to be discussed and approved by the MPA, which also includes the government, in this case the ministry,” Priadjati pointed out.

“Therefore, the decision as to whether the 2016 PHVA document will be upgraded or not will first await the decision from the MPA meeting,” he affirmed.
