JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - In response to an order from Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya, an official letter has been sent (Jul 24) to the Indonesian Orangutan Forum (FORINA) - the initiator of the modified 2019 orangutan population and habitat viability assessment (PHVA) document - requesting that the illegal publication be withdrawn.
"We made this firm move to follow up on our minister's order," the Ministry's Nature Resources and Ecosystem Conservation Director General Wiratno told FORESTHINTS.NEWS in an update (Jul 28).
"Furthermore, in the letter we asked FORINA that the modified 2019 illegal document no longer be used as a scientific reference and not include the ministry's name, logo and copyrights," he stressed.
Wiratno said that FORINA has already responded to the letter (Jul 27), issuing a written apology for its mistake.
“FORINA also stated that it will withdraw the modified 2019 document and revert to the preceding document (the 2016 version), as well as communicate these matters to the IUCN,” he elaborated.
On the same date (Jul 27), the director general explained, FORINA also wrote to the IUCN to inform it of the withdrawal of the modified 2019 document, thereby rendering it obsolete as a scientific reference.

Detailed letter
Director General Wiratno pointed out that the letter to FORINA had been written chronologically, based on the substance of the illegal document, and referred to the results of an internal investigation.
According to the director general, the publication of the illegal modified 2019 PHVA document, which bears the ministry's logo without permission and abuses its copyrights, was a very shameful deed and must not be repeated.
FORINA’s quick action to address the demands in the ministry’s letter, he continued, is good in that they didn’t take long to withdraw the illegal modified 2019 document.
“As stated in the ministry’s letter to FORINA, the publication of the illegal modified 2019 document resulted in harm to the Indonesian government,” he lamented.
“This illegal product has been used as a reference for propaganda purposes, which is a serious concern for our minister,” Wiratno added.
He went on to say that Minister Nurbaya had given the opportunity for the substance and data of the 2016 PHVA document to be upgraded, but that this was not to be done in a one-sided and illegal manner as was the case with the publication of the modified 2019 PHVA document.
“Don’t play around using the name, logo, and copyrights of the ministry without permission, especially for propaganda purposes. This is the reason why our minister reacted so severely to the illegal publication of the modified 2019 orangutan PHVA document,” Director General Wiratno warned in conclusion.
