JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - A significant milestone was marked (Nov 16) as Indonesia celebrated the graduation ceremony of the Green Youth Movement (GYM) education program and the confirmation of its Green Ambassadors, a group poised to play a crucial role in shaping the nation's environmental future.

In a gathering filled with gratitude and praise, Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Professor Siti Nurbaya expressed her delight in the successful implementation of the GYM program, engaging 1,979 students from 1,068 schools across all 35 provinces in Indonesia.

The ceremony, held in Jakarta, brought together key figures, including Chalid Muhammad, founder of the Indonesian Green Institute - initiator of the GYM program - as well as various officials within the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MOEF) and other relevant stakeholders.

The Green Ambassadors, now confirmed by the Minister's Decree, underwent four months of comprehensive education, becoming catalysts for environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

The Minister emphasized the pivotal role played by the Green Ambassadors in environmental matters, acknowledging the youth as a potent component in enhancing Indonesia's environmental sustainability.

“The spirit of the youth in efforts towards environmental mitigation, rehabilitation, and management is something we need to recognize as a significant force in maintaining the sustainability of the environment, which we continue striving to improve,” the Minister affirmed.

Notably, the GYM education program has successfully facilitated participants to share experiences, fostering a strong network among students nationwide.

“I believe that future Green Ambassadors will continue to emerge, representing various environmental perspectives within the broad and extensive spectrum of our understanding of the environment,” Minister Nurbaya added.

Role on global stage

The graduation ceremony also served as a platform to reassert Indonesia's ongoing commitment to climate recovery, in light of the upcoming COP28 in Dubai.

This commitment is exemplified, according to the Minister, by the nation's achievements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with a target of 31.89%, translating to a remarkable decrease of 52% in emissions from the business-as-usual baseline.

“Through our dedication to lowering greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89%, Indonesia aims to reduce emissions by at least 915 million tons of CO2 equivalent, as per the CM1 scenario. This achievement will be further enhanced if it aligns with the CM2 scenario,” Minister Nurbaya continued.

The Minister's address also touched upon the diverse interests of the GYM participants, with a majority expressing concern for waste management (52.6%), followed by climate change (29.8%) and biodiversity (17.5%).

“This variation (in interests) aligns with the dimensions of sustainability that we need to understand, specifically related to both environmental capacity and quality of life,” Minister Nurbaya elaborated.

Acknowledging the current environmental threats, the Minister called for intergenerational collaboration, particularly emphasizing the crucial role of the youth in addressing these challenges alongside relevant stakeholders.

The Green Ambassadors were lauded as future leaders, ready to inherit the responsibility of preserving Indonesia's rich biodiversity and natural resources.

The Minister further highlighted Indonesia's exemplary role on the global stage, showcasing achievements at COP26 and COP27, particularly in initiatives related to the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 climate goals.

“Indonesia’s commitment to renewable energy, encapsulated by the recent inauguration of the 192 MW Peak Solar Power Plant in Cirata among many other initiatives, stands out as a testament to the country’s dedication to environmental stewardship,” Minister Nurbaya asserted.

Immense pride

Expressing pride in the success of the GYM, the Minister officially inaugurated the 1,979 Green Ambassadors, hailing from diverse schools and regions. The participants underwent comprehensive education processes facilitated by MOEF’s operational local offices and conservation cadres, contributing to the success of the program.

The Minister called for continued support and encouragement for the youth, emphasizing the role of communication, information, education, and innovation in preserving the environment.

The devotedness of the MOEF to advancing environmental education initiatives was reiterated by the Minister, emphasizing the collaborative effort required for a sustainable future.

As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere was one of hope and optimism, with Indonesia looking towards a future where the Green Ambassadors lead a massive, inclusive, and innovative movement towards environmental restoration, ensuring a sustainable planet for generations to come.

“With the emergence of these young Green Ambassadors, we hope that the environmental restoration movement will be much more extensive, inclusive, and innovative, so that the Earth can recover and become a comfortable place to live once again” the Minister enthused.

The government, and particularly the MOEF, the Minister pointed out, is committed to advancing environmental activities, such as the one organized here, for the benefit of our shared future and the progress of the environmental and forestry sectors in Indonesia.

“Environmental issues are our shared responsibility, so let us continue to support and encourage the spirit of our younger generation to be agents of change in preserving the sustainability of the environment,” Minister Nurbaya said in conclusion.
