JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Professor Siti Nurbaya has vowed to fight against "irresponsible campaigns" aimed at discrediting Indonesia's carbon governance.
In a technical discussion on the role of Indonesia's carbon markets in supporting overall mitigation in global emissions (Feb 20), the Minister reiterated that Indonesia has in place legally sound carbon governance, and warned against attempts to undermine it by "systematic and irresponsible" carbon market players.
“Indonesia's carbon markets – both domestic and international - are not just a business, but involve concrete climate actions that must be directed towards reducing global emissions,” Minister Nurbaya stressed.
She added that Indonesia's carbon governance was designed to prevent double-counting practices in both domestic and international carbon markets.
The Minister also highlighted the fact that Indonesia's carbon markets represent business opportunities worth billions of dollars which will be retained as a result of Indonesia's robust carbon governance.
According to Minister Nurbaya, "Indonesia is one of the largest players in the global carbon market from a supply side perspective and has unquestionably strong carbon governance in place, such that the country will not lose billions of dollars from its economic value of carbon."
“While some global carbon market players are attempting to discredit Indonesia's carbon governance in a deliberate and systematic manner, I am optimistic they won't succeed in compromising our level of carbon governance,” Minister Nurbaya stated.
“Some of these market players are very eager to take full advantage of Indonesia's carbon markets without being willing to follow our legal procedures. I promise to oppose any attempts to erode the strong carbon governance that exists in Indonesia,” she added.
"I will not tolerate irresponsible campaigns which are deliberately trying to thwart the execution of strong carbon governance in Indonesia,” the Minister warned.
Don't undermine Indonesia's carbon governance
As previously reported by FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Feb 13), the Minister also emphasized her openness to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders, including global carbon market players, who are committed to supporting and strengthening Indonesia's legally-based carbon governance.
“Indonesia's carbon markets are crucial to our country's efforts to mitigate global emissions through a combination of domestic and international carbon markets,” said Minister Nurbaya.
She added that Indonesia continues to work hard to enhance the resilience of its forests, peatlands and mangroves, which are major carbon sinks. "It is not surprising that Indonesia has been praised for its efforts to combat deforestation and forest degradation," the Minister affirmed.
'“Indonesia continues to ensure that its climate actions remain on track and are consistently and positively contributing to the overall mitigation of global emissions,” she elaborated.
"Don't undermine Indonesia's carbon governance by disseminating legally and technically misleading analyses that corner the country and make out as if its carbon governance is lagging and slow to respond to developments in global carbon markets," she cautioned.
The Minister’s comments reaffirm Indonesia's commitment to remaining on a path whereby its concrete climate actions are aligned with its enhanced climate goals.
Minister Nurbaya also sent a strong message to those who seek to diminish Indonesia's efforts to be consistent in its carbon governance, warning them not to continue with their unproductive efforts.
"Indonesia will not be deterred in continuing to play a substantial role in the overall mitigation of global emissions, and will not use carbon markets to manipulate its climate goals," Minister Nurbaya said in closing.
