JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - Musim Mas has responded via its website to a news report posted by FORESTHINTS.NEWS in December last year which revealed that one of its suppliers drained part of Indonesia’s targeted peat restoration areas in South Sumatra’s Muba regency.
In clarification, Musim Mas stated that the supplier concerned (PT BKI) is part of DSN, not the Makin group. Musim Mas did not deny however that PT BKI is part of the Gudang Garam group, as reported by FORESTHINTS.NEWS.
With regard to this case, numerous palm oil supply chain data, including information provided by TFT/Earthworm (2018), show that the Makin group was previously reported to be the parent company of PT BKI. In fact, DSN and the Makin group are both part of Gudang Garam.
As to the case of new palm oil plantation development in parts of the indicative targeted peat restoration areas by PT BKI, which was exposed by FORESTHINTS.NEWS, Musim Mas wrote, “DSN responded to our request for clarification with cogent evidence of its compliance to Indonesia's Plantation Laws.”
Musim Mas added that, “DSN also stated that it has an NDPE policy in place and follows the practices of the RSPO closely.”
“It has demonstrated that it did not plant or drain peatlands, nor did it interfere with the work of the Indonesian Peat Restoration Agency (BRG),” Musim Mas continued.

In its response, Musim Mas went on to assert that, “PT BKI has been taken out of the Peat Moratorium by the BRG.”
However, asked about the matter, the BRG declared that the 2015 burned peat areas drained by PT BKI remain part of the indicative targeted peat restoration areas.
“The location concerned in the company’s concession falls within the indicative targeted peat restoration map,” BRG Chief Nazir Foead confirmed in writing to FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Feb 12).
The BRG chief’s confirmation means that 2015’s burned areas which are under development by PT BKI to make way for new palm oil plantations have not been removed from the indicative map, in contradiction to the claim made by Musim Mas.
The FORESTHINTS.NEWS editorial team contacted Musim Mas once again to ask for its view on the BRG chief’s statement, but no response has been received from the palm oil business group.
