JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - The Indonesian Environment and Forestry Ministry has emphasized the government and forestry sector's successful performance in avoiding a deeper contraction in the growth of forestry product exports. This major progress is demonstrated by the ministry's real-time forestry product export monitoring dashboard.

The value of forestry product exports during the January-August 2020 period stood at almost USD7.2 billion, down 6.9% compared to the same period last year which saw an export value of over USD7.7 billion.

However, in spite of the ongoing global pandemic, this export performance was subsequently successfully boosted to nearly USD8.3 billion for the January-September 2020 period.

Compared to the corresponding value in the same period last year of slightly over USD8.5 billion, this indicates a rise in forestry product export growth to a level of just minus 4.2%.

"The government will continue to undertake real regulatory and policy-based efforts to avoid a deeper minus in the growth of forestry product exports in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic," the Ministry's Secretary General Bambang Hendroyono explained in writing to FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Oct 2).

"The improvement in export performance means that we remain in alignment with our efforts to avoid lay-offs, as much as possible, in the forestry business sector. This is among our minister's top priorities,” he asserted.

As previously reported by FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Mar 23), Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya continues to stress that the forestry business sector should not take shortcuts by implementing lay-off policies in the current difficult times brought about by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The level of rebound performance seen by the end of September 2020 reflects the similarly impactful scale of government efforts to support the forestry business sector in today's complex situation," the general secretary enthused.

"Last year, our forestry export value amounted to USD11.62 billion. Overall, we are confident that this year's export target from the forestry industry will not drop significantly despite the global pandemic, given the current level of performance rebound," he added.

The following graphs depict the movement of Indonesia's forestry product exports from January-September 2020 compared to the same period last year, demonstrating the concrete gains achieved by preventing an even deeper minus in the face of the global pandemic.

Target still in sight

On the back of the improving export performance in the January-September 2020 period, Indonesian Forestry Business Association (APHI) Chairman Indroyono Soesilo is increasingly optimistic that Indonesia will be able to accomplish its export value target for forestry products of between USD10-11 billion this year.

"We are very grateful to the government, especially Minister Nurbaya and the ministry, for the relaxation and incentives provided to the forestry business sector which have enabled us to survive and our export performance to rebound during this global pandemic situation," he said.

"In the last quarter of this year, we are optimistic about achieving the export value target of between USD10-11 billion. This is not only a business matter, but also related to aligned efforts with the government to avoid lay-offs at the highest level," he added.

Soesilo explained that in the fourth quarter of 2020, the value of wood working exports is expected to increase following the government's relaxation and incentives issued in September.

Good reasons

The forestry business association chairman said there are good reasons why the forestry sector is confident about meeting its export value target of USD10-11 billion.

"The value of our exports to the US, China and EU from January-September 2020 continued to grow positively compared to the same period last year. This confirms the great level of export performance of Indonesian forestry products amid the global pandemic," he explained.

"Overall, the value of exports to the EU rose by nearly 5% from January-September 2020 compared to the same period last year. The reimposition of the SVLK (Indonesia's timber legality assurance system) has had a very significant role in achieving this growth in export performance,” he elaborated.

As an example, the chairman pointed to the value of furniture exports to the EU which went up by 53% from January to September 2020 compared to the same period last year, adding that this improved performance is also a clear impact of the reimposition of the SVLK.

As previously reported in a series of news reports by FORESTHINTS.NEWS, Minister Nurbaya showed strong inter-ministerial leadership by ensuring that the SVLK – initially scrapped by a trade ministry regulation - was reimposed.

Soesilo stressed the fact that the absence of haze-causing fires this year has also greatly helped improve the performance of the forestry sector in today’s tough conditions. The association chairman went on to thank the government for its leadership and for all the efforts it has made.

Some of these efforts were highlighted in a recent FORESTHINTS.NEWS news report (Sep 30) which described how, as of late September 2020, a predicted “double disaster” in Indonesia - of haze-causing fires exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic - had not become a reality.

As also earlier reported by FORESTHINTS.NEWS (Jul 3), Minister Nurbaya has declared that permanent solutions are being tested to tackle haze-causing fires this year, as ordered by President Joko Widodo.
