JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - The US Ambassador to Indonesia, Robert O. Blake Jr., says that law enforcement efforts and the creation of the Peatland Restoration Agency represent two very important aspects of Indonesia’s overall peatland restoration effort.
Blake was speaking on Monday (Feb 1) during the Climate Festival event organized by the Indonesian Ministry of the Environment and Forestry in Jakarta.
According to Blake, the increased law enforcement efforts that are underway represent a very important part of the solution.
"And another very important part of the solution is the creation of the Peatland Restoration Agency. That's why we have expressed our public support for Pak Nazir, the new head of the agency, and the agency's mission to rewet the peatlands and find ways to stop the fires. So, the United States provides very strong support for that effort," the Ambassador said.
President Jokowi established the Peatland Restoration Agency through the issuance of a Presidential Regulation that he signed in early January 2016. One of the tasks of the agency is to restore approximately 2 million hectares of peatland burned out by the devastating forest and land fires in 2015.
In addition, the Jokowi administration has adopted law enforcement measures of the kind that were never applied by previous administrations, particularly freezing and revoking the licenses of companies that failed to control forest and land fires on their concessions.
In mid-December, the Jokowi administration also issued a ministerial regulation to take control of burned-out areas on forestry concessions.
